Food and Drug Administration
An operating division of HHS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a number of offices, including that of the Commissioner — which oversees women’s and minority health initiatives — and those addressing medical products and tobacco, food and more. The FDA is responsible for research involving fetal tissue, which has made groundbreaking advances in fighting the zika virus and measles, among other diseases. Yet in September 2018, a long-standing contract between the FDA and a fetal tissue provider was terminated following pressure from anti-abortion groups.
