State Department Office of Global Women’s Issues

The Office of Global Women’s Issues (GWI) has a mandate to “promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls through U.S. foreign policy.” Trump unsuccessfully tried to defund the office, which was subsequently gutted and left leaderless for years. Under previous administrations, GWI had enacted policies including the 2016 Global Strategy to Empower Adolescent Girls, which brought together four U.S. agencies to ensure safety and access to health and education. The Biden-Harris administration must restaff and restore this office.
