Politico Calls a Spade a Spade: Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA List is “Anti-Abortion”
Article comes after Equity Forward declares “SBA List can no longer
call itself ‘pro-life’”
09.06.18 – Earlier this week, Politico released its annual Politico 50 List, which includes long time president of the anti-abortion Susan B Anthony (SBA) List Marjorie Dannenfelser. Despite the fact that SBA List proudly trumpets itself as “pro-life,” Politico dubbed Dannenfelser “Trump’s Anti-Abortion Whisperer” – an accurate reflection of SBA List’s cozy relationship with the Trump administration as well as its ultimate mission, which is to make abortion illegal.
Said Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director of Equity Forward:
“Politico hits the nail on the head by calling SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser ‘anti-abortion’ instead of pro-life. SBA List does nothing to support people who are pregnant or who want to parent. It has one goal: remove all choice and leave women with no other option other carrying a pregnancy to term.
“SBA List is working to reduce access to birth control, the very thing that reduces unintended pregnancy, and defund Planned Parenthood, which will strip many low-income women of the ability to make decisions that are best for them and their families. It remains silent when it comes to the abhorrent maternal mortality rate in the United States that deeply affects women of color. And it refused to denounce the inhumane policy that has left hundreds of children still separated from their families. Dannenfelser and her crew are the epitome of hypocrisy, daring to call themselves ‘pro-life’ when they actually don’t care about pregnant women or parents, their health, or their lives.
“SBA List has endorsed Brett Kavanaugh to serve on the Supreme Court because it is confident he will gut Roe v Wade. Politicians and public officials who receive SBA List’s endorsement should ask themselves if they subscribe to the cruel and narrow worldview espoused by Dannenfelser.”
Last month, Equity Forward declared that the SBA List could no longer call itself “pro-life” after it remained silent on a host of issues facing pregnant women, and especially women of color, including reports of women miscarrying in ICE detention and our nation’s startling maternal mortality crisis. Additionally, as the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy resulted in the mass separation of children from their parents, SBA List chose to hide behind the pro-life moniker, stating they “refrain from public comment on immigration and many other topics, including other policies that impact families.” Dannenfelser has made time to comment, though, on her “perfect abortion bill,” which would only have an exception for “life of the mother.”
