LGBTQIA+ Rights
The Center for American Progress found that while just 0.14% of people ICE detained in 2017 identified as LGBT, 12% of sexual assault and abuse cases within the detention centers targeted LGBTQIA+ people. This abuse is particularly prevalent for transgender and gender non-conforming people. It is imperative that immigrants’ civil liberties on the basis of their gender identity or sexual orientation be protected while in the custody of the immigration system, including those seeking asylum from countries hostile to LQBTQIA+ rights. Safeguards should be put in place to protect LGBTQIA+ communities incarcerated in prisons and jails from inhumane treatment and discriminatory practices.
