Equity Forward Statement on Valerie Huber’s Promotion

**ICYMI**

04.10.18 – With the news of Valerie Huber’s promotion within HHS, Equity Forward executive director Mary Alice Carter released the following statement:

“Valerie Huber is not fit for the two positions she was previously given at HHS, let alone this third senior role advising on public health issues. Huber’s career has revolved around promoting abstinence only education, including openly questioning the CDC’s findings that birth control reduces unintended pregnancy. It’s a shame that Azar’s HHS has become an agency where ideology shapes policy, and science and evidence are increasingly ignored.”

Valerie Huber, a prominent abstinence education advocate within HHS, has been promoted to senior adviser in an office overseeing public health issues, according to an internal HHS email obtained by POLITICO.

Huber will be senior policy adviser to the assistant secretary for health, which oversees the U.S. surgeon general’s office as well as programs for women’s health, vaccines and minority health. She was previously the office’s chief of staff and has been serving as the acting deputy assistant secretary for HHS’ Office of Population Affairs.

Huber, who joined HHS in June, will continue her role in the HHS population affairs office until a replacement is named. The position was previously held by Teresa Manning, who had worked for anti-abortion groups and was fired from HHS early this year.
