HHS Watch: Holding the Administration Accountable for Appointees, Policies

Equity Forward recently launched HHS Watch, a campaign that examines decision makers at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a full audit into the positions and backgrounds of appointees and continuous monitoring of their actions.

President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and HHS Secretary Alex Azar are overseeing a wholesale redesign of America’s health policy, particularly as it relates to reproductive health. Appointees to the agency under their leadership are actively seeking to undermine proven, popular, and effective reproductive health programs, as well as Americans’ independent reproductive health decisions.

Secretary Azar: As long as Scott Lloyd remains director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, you’re stuck with all of his baggage. Read our press release and learn more about Scott Lloyd.

Secretary Azar took the helm at this critical yet troubled agency in early 2018. However, issues of transparency and accountability remain. Equity Forward believes that there should be full daylight around the who, how, and why of changes within HHS.

The Anti Birth Control, Anti-Reproductive Health takeover of HHS

Birth control and reproductive health care play an integral role in family planning decisions for the majority of Americans, and are overwhelmingly popular. Nearly 9 out of ten women of reproductive age will use birth control. Major medical groups agree that birth control is an essential part of healthcare and policy makers have consistently supported access to birth control.

Now, the Trump Administration is going after reproductive health care on multiple fronts by:

… fundamentally reshaping Title X into a program focused on a limited, conservative view of reproductive health that doesn’t prioritize contraception

stopping immigrant women from accessing abortion services

no longer considering abortion a medical reproductive health service

establishing a new “conscience protection division” within HHS to allow providers to deny service to people

… and appointing far right-wing ideologues to positions of huge importance to the future of our nation’s health care.

About HHS Watch

Equity Forward will ensure that decisions and processes undertaken by the agency meant to alter the agency’s long-standing commitment to public health are fully transparent and that the agency is accountable to the American people. Too many individuals rely on our government’s commitment to reproductive health access for us to allow room for deception or obfuscation by HHS.

As part of HHS Watch, Equity Forward will increase scrutiny both on the Trump Administration’s appointments and decisions that undermine HHS’ strong commitment to public health, such as populating the agency with ideologues who reject the importance of both science and evidence in reproductive health decision making.
